Babraben Moru Bhanani
Gujurat, India
Babraben was born Dungri, Nagar Parkar (Sindh). In 1972, when she was about 12, her family migrated to Tharad. She still remembers Pakistan. Her father was a weaver and farmer, there, and she had 6 brothers and 2 sisters. Babraben married in Tharad, but the family moved to Sumrasar. At first they lived in a rented bhungo, then they bought land and built a home. Babraben has 3 sons. Her only daughter Nirmala graduated from KRV in 2009. Bababen learned suf and kharek embroidery at the age of 10 or 12 from her grandmother in Sindh. A fast and focused artisan, she became one of the founding trustees of Kala Raksha. About this Fair Trade Product
Narrative wall hangings depict aspects of women’s lives in Kutch. Each piece is unique. Themes include the seasons, historical events, festivals and everyday life. Cotton, natural dyed and hand printed fabrics. Each is signed by the artist (and sometimes labeled) in Gujarati or English. Included is a tag telling the story. Award winning animated documentary film “The Stitches Speak,” based on the work and voices of Kala Raksha narrative artists also available.
The series was awarded UNESCO’s Seal of Excellence Award in 2008.
Natural dyed, hand block printed fabric, hand stitched to natural dyed handloom fabric. Sleeve on reverse for hanging.

We don’t get rain every year in Kutch, so when it rains everyone is happy. People dance in the rain with umbrellas.
Women make hot snacks on the hearth. We sow crops and plant trees. The trees become green and the birds sing.
When the pond overflows, everyone celebrates.
